Why Your Donation Matters
The Kawasaki Disease Foundation is entirely volunteer-run and passionate about our mission to raise awareness, provide family support, and fund research to fight Kawasaki Disease. But we can’t do it without your help.
KDF’s mission is grounded in three fundamental principles:
- Raising awareness among the medical community, childcare providers, and the general public is critical to ensuring early diagnosis and treatment.
- Facilitating support for families is essential as they navigate this rare disease and its potentially devastating effects on their child’s health.
- Increasing funding for research is key to improving diagnostic guidelines, treatment, and follow-up care while searching for the cause of this rare condition.
We rely solely on donations to fund critical research and support programs that provide life-changing assistance to children and families affected by KD. With no paid staff, your donations go directly into impactful initiatives that support these families.
A Personal Message from Wendy Lewis, a KDF Intern
As someone who has experienced the uncertainty and fear of Kawasaki Disease firsthand, I’m passionate about raising awareness and supporting research. When my six-month-old nephew became seriously ill, we had no idea what was happening. What started as what seemed like a simple cold quickly escalated, and after testing negative for several common illnesses, my sister was about to be sent home from the pediatrician’s office with no answers. But just moments before leaving, she noticed a faint rash on his body. At that moment, the pediatrician urged her to immediately take him to CHOC hospital for further evaluation.
There, an echocardiogram revealed several inflamed coronary arteries, and my nephew was diagnosed with Incomplete Kawasaki Disease.
For children like my nephew—so young, so innocent, and just beginning their lives—a diagnosis like this can be traumatic. It turns your world upside down, filled with overwhelming uncertainty about their future.
What made this experience even more difficult was the isolation. Kawasaki Disease is rare, and in that moment, we didn’t know anyone who had been through something like this. It felt as though we were facing it alone. This is why I’m so dedicated to raising awareness and supporting Kawasaki Disease research. Early recognition of the signs, along with access to support groups, is vital for families going through this challenging journey.
Spreading awareness and funding research takes time, effort, and financial support—this is why your donation is so critical. With 90 cents of every dollar donated going directly to research and programs that support affected families, you can be confident that your contribution is making a real difference.
