KD Aneurysm & Transition of Care
A group of experts led by Dr. Tremoulet from the Kawasaki Disease Research Center at the University of California, San Diego has published a manuscript through the American Heart Association. The manuscript highlights the importance of a smooth transition of care for patients with aneurysms due to Kawasaki disease (KD) from pediatric to adult healthcare settings. If this transition is not done well, there is a risk of patients being lost to follow-up, which can lead to poor outcomes in these patients.
The statement reviewed the current guidelines for long-term care of KD patients with aneurysms and offered guidance on how to best prepare the patient, their families, and their adult providers for a successful transition. The authors suggest that formal transition-of-care programs for patients with KD who develop aneurysms should be established to ensure uninterrupted medical care and a smooth transition as these patients become adults.
