Meet Emily Rodriguez: KDF Intern

Meet Emily Rodriguez: KDF Intern

Allow us to introduce Emily. At just four months old, she received a diagnosis of Kawasaki Disease. Her case was complex—her symptoms were unusual, confounding doctors back in 2005. After numerous misdiagnoses, including ear infection, meningitis, and scarlet fever, the right diagnosis was finally reached following days of uncertainty and deteriorating health. She was treated with IVIG, and for a short time, her condition improved.

However, just days after going home, a low-grade fever indicated that the battle was ongoing. During a routine cardiologist follow-up, it was found that she was still exhibiting symptoms. Emily was readmitted, where she underwent another round of IVIG along with a mix of other medications. After an additional week in the hospital, her symptoms subsided, but she was left with multiple aneurysms that necessitated daily Lovenox injections and aspirin.

Fast forward 19 years, Emily is thriving as a healthy teenager studying Health Science at the University of Florida. She continues to see her cardiologist and maintains her daily aspirin regimen, along with annual stress tests, alternating between standard and nuclear varieties.

This year, we are proud to have Emily as one of our dedicated interns! Thank you, Emily, for your commitment and effort in raising awareness and funds for Kawasaki Disease. Emily emphasizes, “There is still so much unknown about this disease, which is why we need your help to find a cure. Please consider participating in our challenges to raise awareness!”
