Jayda’s Birthday Fundraiser for Kawasaki Disease

In August of 2018, our daughter Jayda was diagnosed with a rare childhood disease called Kawasaki Disease. Kawasaki Disease is an unusual illness characterized by inflammation of blood vessels throughout the body. The following symptoms accompany it: fever, rash, swelling of the hands and feet, bloodshot eyes, irritation and redness of the mucous membranes of the mouth, lips, and throat, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. The immediate effects of Kawasaki disease may not be severe, but, in some cases, long-term complications, including damage to the coronary arteries and heart muscle, may result. It is an illness that can cause permanent heart damage or even lead to death if not diagnosed within ten days of developing it.

Luckily Jayda was diagnosed by day seven, and we were able to start treatment right away; she was in the hospital for a week but was a brave trooper the entire time. Since then, she has regular visits to the cardiologist and seems to be doing fine!

Every year more than 4,200 children are diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease in the United States. This disease affects children almost exclusively; most patients are under five years of age. To date, no cause of Kawasaki disease has been identified. Since this is a relatively new disease, there is a lot of research that needs to be done to help find a cause and permanent cure.

Sunday, January 26th, is National Kawasaki Disease Awareness Day; January 25th is Jayda’s birthday. We are having a fundraiser in Jayda’s name to help raise money for the research of this rare disease. Please help us to spread awareness!.
