Kawasaki Disease and Heart Health
According to the American Heart Association, Kawasaki disease can affect the heart in as many as one in four children.
The disease can lead to damage in the blood vessels that supply the heart muscle (coronary arteries) and to the heart muscle itself. This damage can result in an enlargement or swelling of the blood vessel wall, known as an aneurysm. Infants less than one year old are at a higher risk of heart complications from Kawasaki disease than older children and adults.
